Get Started

In the following sections, we will guide you through getting started with MusicReader. 
We will cover downloading and setting up the app, followed by steps to add and open your files.

Download & Install App

To download and install MusicReader, please follow the instructions below. 
These steps apply to all devices, so make sure to complete them on the device where you want to install MusicReader.
  1. Open Address Bar of browserLocate and click on the Address Bar of your browser.
  2. DownloadClick the Download icon to begin the downloading process.
  3. Choose Operating SystemSelect the operating system you want to run MusicReader on.
  4. WindowsAfter clicking, you see a link to the Microsoft Store. Click that link, and you get an option to install the App on your Windows 10 / 11.
  5. iPhone / iPadAfter clicking, you see a link to the AppStore. Click that link, and you get an option to install the App on your iPad / iPhone.
  6. AndroidAfter clicking, you see a link to the Google Play. Click that link, and you get an option to install the App on your Android device.
  7. MacOSThis link will download the macOS release of MusicReader. After downloading, you can open the file to start the installation.
  8. ChromeBookAfter clicking, you see a link to the Google Play. Click that link, and you get an option to install the App on your ChromeBook device.

Setup App & Account

After installation, launch MusicReader to see the screen shown below. Select either the 'New User' or 'Existing User' option as prompted.
  • Register as New UserSelect this option if you are a new user without an existing account. You will be guided through the process of creating a new account for MusicReader.
  • Log in as Existing UserClick here if you already have an account. You will be prompted to log in. Once logged in, MusicReader will download your library and configure the application for you.

Add your files

To use your own music in MusicReader, you first need to add it to the app.
MusicReader offers a variety of ways to add files directly within the app.
These options are explained in detail here:

Sync with Account

After adding files or making other changes, we recommend syncing the app with your account. 
This ensures that files and updates are transferred to your account, serving as both a backup and a way to keep your sheet music consistent across multiple devices.

Here are the steps to start the sync process:
  1. Display Full MenuSelect the Full Menu icon to view all available menu items in MusicReader.
  2. SyncTap the Sync icon to synchronize your MusicReader account with the latest data.
  3. Sync NowPress the Sync Now icon to immediately start the synchronization process of MusicReader with your account.
Please remember to sync your other devices as well to maintain up-to-date access everywhere.

Open Your Music

Once you've added your sheet music, you can access it in the Library. 
Follow the instructions below to open and view your files
  1. Library IconClick this icon to go to the library that contains your sheet music.
  2. List of piecesClick a piece here to open it in MusicReader. This area displays a selection of your available music pieces.
For more detailed description of library functionality go to the library section .

General Interface

After opening the sheet music, you will see the screen shown below. 
Explore the overview of available options provided below.
  • Piece InformationView the title of the current piece here. Click this area to modify piece information, linked folders, and playlists.
  • Next PageTap this area to navigate to the next page, located on the right side of the screen. You can also swipe anywhere on the sheet music to turn the page.
  • Previous PageTap this area to navigate to the previous page, located on the left side of the screen. You can also swipe anywhere on the sheet music to turn back a page.
  • Page Display SettingsAdjust the settings for displaying pages here, including the number of pages shown.
  • Page SettingsChange the settings related to page display.
  • BookmarksAccess and modify your bookmarks here.
  • PlaylistClick here to access the playlist screen.
  • Current Page Number & OverviewThe current displayed page number is shown here. Click the icon to view all pages in the current piece and quickly jump to a specific page.
  • Hide Menu / Enter Full ScreenClick here to hide the menu and switch to full screen mode.
  • Annotation ToolsClick here to access the annotation tools.
  • LibraryClick this icon to enter the library containing your sheet music.
  • Full MenuDisplay all available menu items for MusicReader.
After clicking the full menu icon you will see this screen:
  • Top MenuThis area displays the top menu of the app, including an edit button for modifications.
  • Library & File FunctionsThis section contains all functions associated with managing libraries and files.
  • Page Editing ToolsThis area provides access to various functions for managing and editing pages.
  • Devices & AssistantsIn this section, you will find functions related to devices and digital assistants.
  • App & Account SettingsThis area includes all functions related to app settings and account management.
  • Edit Top MenuClick this button to access editing options for the top menu.

Page Display & Setup

MusicReader had many features to customize the display of the sheet music.
These will be described in the coming sections.

Display Mode

Display Mode determines the way the pieces are displayed.
This allows you to display one, two or half pages on screen.
The screenshot below shows the display modes settings and adjustments available.
  • Supported GesturesDisplays the gestures that can be used in this mode.
  • Additional Display SettingsAccess more options to customize the display settings of MusicReader.
  • Default Display SettingsSet default display options that will apply to all new pieces.
  • Half Page DisplayShow half of a page on a landscape screen. This option is unavailable in portrait mode.
  • Page ScrollingScroll vertically through the pages. You can drag up or down to scroll, or swipe left or right to jump between pages.
  • Full Page DisplayView a single page on either portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Two Pages DisplayView two pages side by side when the screen is in landscape orientation.
  • Page SettingsModify the settings for individual pages.
  • Pages SetupAdjust the order of pages in the piece. You can hide, clone, or delete pages, or rearrange them. You can also replace pages with new versions.
  • Crop PagesAdjust the cropping for a specific page.
For one page display there are additional settings to determine how pages are turn.
The screen below shows these options.
  • Page Turn ConfigurationCustomize the page turn behavior for each individual page. Refer to 'Page Settings' for more detailed instructions.
  • Half Page TurnDisplays the top half of the next page over the current page, allowing for a half-page transition.
  • Full Page TurnCompletes a transition by turning one full page at a time.
  • Adjust Page SettingsModify the settings related to each page individually, providing control over how each page behaves.
Similar options are also available when displaying two pages, see the following screenshot.
  • Turn pages one at a timeThis function allows you to flip through the pages one at a time. The left page will change first (e.g., from page 1 to page 3), followed by the right page with the next press (e.g., from page 2 to page 4).
  • Custom Page Turn SettingsYou can customize the page turn settings for each individual page. Refer to the 'Page Settings' option for more information.
  • Turn next page on the leftThe next page will be displayed on the left side, while the current left page will move to the right. For example, it will transition from pages 1 and 2 to pages 2 and 3.
  • Turn both pages simultaneouslyThis option will change both pages at the same time, moving from pages 1 and 2 to pages 3 and 4, and so forth.
  • Adjust Page SettingsIn this section, you can modify the settings for each page independently to suit your preferences.
It's also possible to choose scrolling display mode:
  • Scrolling GesturesThis area showcases the available gestures for scrolling, including dragging up or down, pressing left or right, and swiping.
The display settings are specific for a piece.
To determine the default setting use the screen below.
  • Default View for New FilesThis area represents the standard layout displayed for any new file created in the application.

Cropping & Rotation

To improve the size of the music you can crop and/or rotate it.
This can be done in the screen shown below.
  • Sheet Music with Cropping AreaDisplays the sheet music along with an adjustable cropping area highlighted in gray. You can reposition or resize the cropping area using the dark gray handles.
  • Resize HandleA handle used to adjust the size of the cropping area.
  • Detect Crop of Current PageAnalyzes the current page to automatically detect and highlight the appropriate cropping area.
  • Make Crop Full PageExpands the cropping area to cover the entire page.
  • Rotate Page LeftRotates the page counterclockwise by 90 degrees.
  • Rotate Page RightRotates the page clockwise by 90 degrees.
  • Previous PageNavigates to the previous page of the sheet music.
  • Next PageAdvances to the next page of the sheet music.
  • Detect Cropping of All PagesAutomatically detects and suggests cropping areas for all pages in the document.

Page Setting

For pages it's possible to set individual settings.
You can set the page turn type, half page break, crop and rotation.
These can be specified using the screen below.
  • Page NavigationNavigate through the document by turning pages forward or backward.
  • Crop EditingAdjust the cropping settings for the currently viewed page.
  • Page RotationRotate the currently displayed page to your preferred orientation.
  • Page Order ManagementReorganize and modify the order of pages in the document.
  • Half Page Break AdjustmentAdjust the half-page break settings available in one-page or half-page view modes.
  • Display Mode SelectionChange the display mode to view a different number of pages at once.
  • Page Turn OptionsChoose the method for turning to the next page in your document.

Pages Setup

The screen to order and edit pages is shown in screenshots below.
The first screenshot shows the mail page order settings.
Here you can clone, hide and reorder pages.
Cloned pages can also be removed.
  • Select PageClick on a page to display its content on the right side of the interface.
  • Show / Hide PageToggle the visibility of the selected page with this button.
  • Drag PageClick and hold this icon to move the page to a different location.
  • Clone PageCreate a duplicate of the page; the new copy will be added at the end of the list.
  • Remove Cloned PageUse this button to delete a page that was cloned.

File Edit / Add Pages

The second tab allows to replace specific pages inside the piece or to add pages to an existing piece.
In this way you can merge multiple files or replace faulty page.
Be aware this will replace pages for any piece using the same file.
  • Select File EditorClick on this icon to open the tab for selecting a file editor.
  • Replace Current PagePress this button to replace the current page with a new one.
  • Add New PagesClick here to insert one or more new pages into the document.

Replace File

With the last tab you can replace the full file as shown below.
  • Replace Full FileUse this option to completely replace the existing file. Ensure that the new file contains the same number or more pages than the original.

Manage Music Files

MusicReader offers a variety of features to help you manage your sheet music files. 
These features will be explained in detail in the following sections.

Library

To access the music library, click on the icon in the top menu, as shown below.
  1. Library IconClick this icon to navigate to the library that contains your sheet music.

Search & Open

After opening the music library, you will see the search tab as shown below.
Use this tab to search for and open your music, following the methods described below.
  • Displayed StatesUse this area to filter the displayed items based on their current status, including live and archived options.
  • Folder SelectionThis section shows the items contained within the selected folder and its subfolders. Click here to change your active folder.
  • Search FieldEnter keywords to find the item you are looking for. Click the X button to clear the search field.
  • List of ItemsClick on an item in this list to open it in MusicReader for viewing.
  • More Details ButtonsClick these buttons to access additional information about an item, including an example page.
  • Alphabetical Quick JumpPress a letter here to quickly navigate to items starting with that letter. The navigation is based on the column used for sorting the list.
  • Sheet Music PreviewDisplays the first page of the sheet music. Click on the left or right side to navigate to the previous or next page.
  • Piece InformationContains key details about the piece, including the title, composer, instrument, and category.
  • OpenAccess and view this piece in MusicReader.
  • Edit InfoModify the piece information such as the title, composer, and instrument.
  • Toggle Piece StateSwitch the piece's status between live and archived.
  • Share / Print / ExportClick here to share, email, print, or export this piece.
  • Manage FoldersView and adjust the folders associated with this piece.
  • Manage PlaylistsView and edit the playlist that this piece belongs to.
  • Remove PieceDelete this piece from your library.
After clicking the 'Details' button, a dropdown area will appear, as shown below.

Manage

The music library also includes a 'Manage' tab, as shown below.
This tab allows you to add and edit pieces, as well as organize them into folders.
  • Manage FoldersClick here to open the folder management interface.
  • Edit/Delete Music PiecesClick here to modify or remove music pieces.
  • Connect Cloud StorageAdd files from cloud storage services such as Google Drive or Dropbox.
  • Email to MusicReaderSend files to your MusicReader via this email address.
  • Scan Sheet MusicUtilize your scanner to digitize printed sheet music.
  • Capture Music ImagesUse your device's camera to take photographs of sheet music.
  • Import Local FilesAdd files stored on your device or attached cloud storage.
  • Download from WebObtain files directly from online sources.

Folders

In the 'Folders' tab, you can assign pieces to specific folders, as explained in the instructions below.
  • Folder ContentDisplays the items currently inside the folder. Selecting an item here will remove it from the folder, but it will remain available in the library.
  • Library ItemsChoose an item from this area to add it to the folder.

Settings

The music library offers multiple settings to customize your experience. 
Refer to the instructions below to explore the available options.
  • Visible ColumnsChoose the columns to display in the library screen.
  • Column NamesEdit the names of the selected columns here.
Library settings are explained in screenshots below.
  • Remember Active PlaylistEnables MusicReader to save your currently active playlist for future sessions.
  • Remember Active PieceEnables MusicReader to save the currently active musical piece for future sessions.
  • Remember Active FolderEnables MusicReader to save the currently active folder in your library for future sessions.

Add Files

MusicReader provides a wide range of options for adding files. 
These options are available both in the Library and on the 'Full Menu' screen. 
Refer to the overview below for details on the available options.

  • Camera & ScannerUtilize your device's camera to capture images of sheet music or employ a scanner to digitize your printed sheet music.
  • Email InboxSend files via email to MusicReader and retrieve them from this designated inbox.
  • Web BrowserAccess and download files directly from websites.
  • Local Files & Cloud StorageImport files stored on your device or from cloud services such as Google Drive and Dropbox.
After selecting files to add you have the options shown in the screenshot below.
It may look a little bit different, depending on the option you choose.
  • File Addition Method & Selected FilesThis section displays the chosen method for adding files along with the list of files you have selected for upload.
  • File Addition Mode SelectionIn this area, you can choose the mode for adding files.
  • Rapid File AdditionThis option applies default settings for page layout and cropping, allowing for a faster file addition process.
  • Automatic Adjustment of SettingsThis feature automatically detects the best page layout and cropping settings. Note that processing large files may take some time.
  • Title Configuration ModeAutomatically generated titles for uploaded files.
  • Use Filename as TitleSelect this option to set the file's name as its title.
  • Use Embedded File InformationThis option utilizes metadata from the file for the title, if available; otherwise, it defaults to using the filename.
  • Automatic Title DetectionThis feature identifies the title and composer from the PDF's embedded information, prioritizing the most reliable source when multiple are present.
  • Select Folder for File AdditionChoose the directory where the selected file will be saved.
  • Start File AdditionClick this button to begin adding the selected files using your specified settings.

Local Files

For local files you can choose the options below.
  • Select FolderSelect a folder containing files to be added to MusicReader. This will include the folder name and any subfolders, allowing for easy navigation within the library.
  • Select FilesSelect individual files that you wish to add to MusicReader.
  • Link Local FolderCreate a shortcut to a local folder, simplifying the process of adding files from that location.
After selecting files you get the options explain in Add Files section .



Cloud Storage

Files can also be added from cloud storage services, as demonstrated in the screenshot below.
  1. Link CloudClick on the 'Link Cloud' icon to start linking a cloud service.
  2. Choose Cloud ServiceClick on the 'Choose Cloud Service' icon to open a drop-down menu and select the cloud service you want to add.
  3. Link methodIn the 'Link method' area, choose the way you want to link the cloud service. The available options may differ depending on the platform and cloud service.

Camera / Scanner

When you start the camera / scanner option, the screen shown below will appear. 
  • Photo PreviewDisplays a preview of the currently selected photo.
  • Existing PagesShows the photos of existing pages. You can select one to preview, rotate, or remove it.
  • Add FileEnter a title and click this button to upload the pages to MusicReader as a single file.
  • Capture New PhotoClick this button to take a new photo.
  • Scan New PageUse a scanner to scan a new page. This feature is compatible with select scanners across various platforms.
  • Delete Selected PageClick to remove the currently selected page from the list.
  • Rotate Selected PagePress this button to rotate the currently selected page.
To take a photo press the photo icon and you will see the screen below:
  • Camera PreviewThis area displays the current view from the camera. Tap here to capture a photo.
  • Switch CameraUse this button to switch between multiple available cameras on your device.
  • Take PhotoTap this button to capture a photo.
After taking the photo, you can select the best quality using the options shown on the screen below. 
You also have the option to retake the photo if needed.
  • Select Photo QualitySelect the photo that provides the best quality. This option will be saved.
  • Return to Photo OverviewClick here to return to the main overview of your captured photos.
  • Capture New PhotoClick here to take a new photo.
After confirming the photo, the overview screen will appear again, showing the new page. 
From here, you can add additional pages, rotate or delete them, or save the complete file to MusicReader.

If you press the scan icon you will get this screen:
  • Choose Your ScannerIf your scanner is not appearing, ensure it is connected, installed, and powered on.
  • Begin ScanningPress this button to initiate the scan. Typically, a settings dialog will appear, allowing you to adjust options before the scanning process starts.
  • Go Back to OverviewClick this button to abort the scanning process and return to the main overview screen.

After confirming the title, you get the options explained in <a href="#33">Add Files section</a>.

Mailbox

You can also email files to MusicReader using a designated email address. 
These files will be stored in the mailbox within your account. 
Refer to the screenshot below to see how this works.
  • Files in MailboxChoose the files you wish to add to MusicReader or remove from the mailbox.
  • E-Mail Address MailboxThis is the email address to which you can send files. Click the address to open your email application.
  • Add Selected FilesClick to add the files you have selected to MusicReader.
  • Refresh MailboxClick to update the list of items in the mailbox.
  • Remove Selected FilesClick to delete the selected files from the mailbox.

Browser / Download

It's also possible to download files directly from a website.
This feature is described in the another section .

Open in App

To add files, you can also open them in the MusicReader App.
Locate the file on you system and then choose to open it with MusicReader.
MusicReader will then open with the Add Files screen.

Sync with Account

After adding files or making other changes, we recommend syncing the app with your account. 
This ensures that files and updates are transferred to your account, serving as both a backup and a way to keep your sheet music consistent across multiple devices.

Piece Information

A piece inside MusicReader can have more information than only a title and composer.
To change this information you can go to the Piece Information screen.

There are three ways to get to this screen.
The first can be used to change any piece in the library and the second applies to the active piece.
  1. Library IconClick this icon to go to the library containing your sheet music.
  2. More Details ButtonsClick these buttons to get more details about a piece, including an example page.
  3. InfoClick this icon to change Piece Info like title, composer and instrument.
  1. Display Full MenuSelect the Full Menu icon to display all menu items of MusicReader.
  2. Piece InformationSelect the Piece Information icon to view and modify the details of a piece.
  • View Piece DetailsSelect this icon to access detailed information about the piece.
Inside the screen there are three tabs.
In the first you can change the piece information:
  • Edit InformationThis section allows you to modify the details of the item.
  • Manage FoldersAccess and update the folder to which this item belongs.
  • Manage PlaylistsView and edit the playlist associated with this item.
The second you can see and change the playlists that contain this piece:
  • Playlist OverviewThis area displays a list of playlists. The currently selected playlist will be highlighted and indicates that it includes this specific track.
  • Select FolderUse this icon to choose the folder from which you would like to view the available playlists.
The last tab you can see and change the folders that contain this piece:
  • Folders DisplayDisplays a list of all available folders. The item is associated with the selected folder.
  • Selected Folder IconRepresents a folder that contains the current item.

Remove Files

For removing files from music library there are several ways to do this.
See options below.

Single Files

To remove a single file you can go to the library with the steps shown in screenshots below.
  1. Library IconClick this icon to go to the library containing your sheet music.
  2. ManagePress here to manage the library.
  3. Edit / DeletePress here to go to edit / delete pieces in the library.
  4. Delete buttonPress here to delete a piece.

Mass Edit / Delete

Mass Edit

  1. Mass Edit IconPress here to go to the mass edit screen.
  2. List of selected pieces to edit.This area displays the pieces that you have selected for editing.
  3. Select pieces from the library.This area allows you to choose pieces from the library for editing.
  4. Confirm Piece SelectionPress here to confirm your selection of pieces for editing.
  5. Select fields to editThis area enables you to choose which fields of the selected pieces will be edited.
  6. Confirm FieldsPress here to confirm the fields you have selected to edit.
  7. Edit individual piecesThis area allows you to edit each selected piece individually.
  8. Click here to change all at once.Press here to apply changes to all selected pieces simultaneously.

Mass Delete

If you want to remove multiple pieces, then there are different steps as shown below.
  1. Mass EditPress here to go to mass edit.
  2. Batch DeletePress here to start deleting multiple files.
  3. LibraryHere you select the pieces you want to remove.
  4. Pieces to deleteCheck the list of pieces to delete.
  5. Remove SelectedPress this button to remove the selected pieces.

Clear Complete Library

This can be you want to clear your complete library.
In that case follow the steps below.
Be aware that with these steps you really fully clear it, also on other devices attached to your account.
  1. SyncSync the App with your account.
  2. Sync NowStart sync of MusicReader with account.
  3. Mass EditPress here to go to mass edit.
  4. Select AllPress here to select all pieces in your library.
  5. Pieces to deleteCheck the list of pieces to delete.
  6. Remove SelectedPress this button to remove the selected pieces.
  7. SyncSync the App with your account.
  8. Sync NowStart sync of MusicReader with account.

Split & Clone

It's also possible to use templates to split a book in multiple pieces.
For this you can use steps below.
  1. Page SelectionIn the Page Selection area, press the pages you want to split to a new one.
  2. Selected PagesIn the Selected Pages area, you can see the pages you selected for splitting.
  3. Optional SettingsIn the Optional Settings area, you can place the new file in a folder and set the book title, which is the title of the piece you are splitting, to a specific library field.
  4. Create PieceClick here to create the new piece.
With books containing multiple pieces you might want to split them to be listed seperately inside the library.
Or want to clone a piece to a second piece.
For this you can use the steps described below.
  1. Splitter TemplatesPress here to split a file using a template.
  2. Choose an optionYou can select one of the available options within this area.
  3. Integrated TemplatesFor few books templates are integrated.
  4. Upload your own templateSee instructions at the top of the screen for required format.

Share / Print / Export

Pieces and files in MusicReader can be shared / exported / printed directly from the App.
This can be done for one file, but also a collection of files.

For doing it for only one file you follow these steps:
  1. Single FilePress here to share a single file.
  2. Which type of file?Select the type of file you want to share or work with.
  3. Music PieceSelect a music piece from the options.
  4. Audio RecordingSelect an audio recording from the options.
  5. Selected FileView the file you have selected for sharing or processing.
  6. Choose ActionSelect the action you want to perform with the selected file.
  7. Print the fileSelect this option to print the selected file.
  8. E-Mail the fileSelect this option to send the selected file via email.
  9. Share the fileSelect this option to share the selected file with others.
  10. Export the fileSelect this option to download the file to your device.
  11. AnnotationsChoose whether to include annotations in the file.
  12. Include annotationsSelect this option to include annotations in the exported or shared file.
  13. Original - no annotationsSelect this option to use the original file without any annotations.
  14. AnnotationsChoose whether to apply annotations to the file.
  15. StartPress here to start the share, print, or export process.
For multiple files the steps are as follows:

Navigation & Page Turning

In MusicReader there are several ways to navigate and turn pages within a piece.
These options will be described in the coming sections.

Page Turning

Page turning in MusicReader can be done in several ways, from touching the screen to automatic page turning.
In the coming sections the different options are described.

Touchscreen - Single Touch

You can press the sheet music to turn the page as shown in this example:
  • Go to Next PageTap this area on the right side of the screen to navigate to the next page.
  • Go to Previous PageTap this area on the left side of the screen to return to the previous page.

Touchscreen - Swiping

You can swipe using you fingers on a touchscreen to turn the page.
Swiping means you slide a finger (or stylus) across the screen in a specific direction.
  • In MusicReader, swiping left to right corresponds to turning the page backward.
  • Swiping right to left advances the page forward.

    • Foot Pedal

    You can turn pages and trigger action using a foot pedal.
    For setting this up please check Foot Pedal Settings

    Automatic Page Turn

    In MusicReader you can have pages turn based on predefined delay.
    This is operated using the screen as shown below.
    • Configure Page Turn DelayTap here to set the delay time for transitioning between pages.
    • Initiate Automatic Page TurningTap here to begin the automatic page turning process, starting from the currently displayed page. The system will use the specified delays, and if no delay is set for any page, it will pause until you turn the page manually.
    Setting up the delays is done using the screen below.
    • Set Page Turn DelayAdjust the delay time for automatic page turning for the current page. A delay of 0 seconds disables automatic page turning, requiring manual page flips.
    • View Current Page NumberDisplays the number of the current page. Use the arrows to navigate and turn pages.
    • Start Timing RecordingClick here to begin recording the timing. While playing the piece, manually turn the pages. Each page turn delay will be automatically recorded. You can turn pages using all available methods, including touch and foot pedals.
    After setting up the delays you can start the timer to have it automatically turn.
    You then get the screen below.
    At that time the pages are turned using the defined delays.
    • Pause Page Turn TimerClick this area to temporarily pause the page turn timer. You can resume it later.
    • Stop Page Turn TimerClick this area to completely stop the page turn timer.

    Pages Overview

    To quickly jump to a certain page you can use pages screen.
    Press the indicated icon to get there:

    1. Click Pages OverviewClick on the Pages Overview icon to see the pages inside the current piece. This will allow you to quickly jump to one of the pages.
    After pressing you get a screen with following options:
    • Navigate to Page ExtremesClick here to quickly jump to the top or bottom of the pages list.
    • View Pages in Current PieceThis area displays all pages from the currently loaded piece, showing a preview image and page number. Scroll down to see more pages.
    • Jump to Specific PageInput a page number and confirm to navigate directly to that page.
    • Adjust Pages DisplayedThis indicator shows the total number of pages currently displayed and allows you to change this setting.
    • Modify Page SettingsVisit this section to adjust the settings for the pages.

    Bookmarks

    Inside MusicReader you can add bookmarks for fast navigation and for linking locations.
    Bookmarks are shown in the sheet music, and linked bookmarks can be pressed.

    The main bookmark screen is shown below.
    Here you can select the bookmark you want to jump to, or go to edit screens.
    • Available BookmarksTap on a bookmark in this section to navigate to that specific location.
    • Filter Bookmark SearchType in a query to filter the bookmarks displayed in the list.
    • Edit Bookmarks ListTap here to modify the bookmarks in the list.
    • Add / Edit Music BookmarksTap here to create or modify bookmarks within the music track.
    The first edit tab is shown below.
    Here you can change basic information of the bookmarks.
    • Linked BookmarkThis area displays linked bookmarks in sheet music. You can click on a bookmark to navigate to a different location. Here, you can also view existing links and modify them to link to another bookmark.
    • Remove BookmarkClick the button in this column to delete the selected bookmark.
    • Change Bookmark NameClick on the item in the name column to edit the bookmark's name.
    • Change Bookmark LetterClick on the item in the letter column to edit the letter associated with the bookmark.
    The second edit method is done on the sheet music itself.
    Here can press the music to select an exising bookmark or to add a new one.
    After that you can edit multiple setting.
    For details check the screenshots below.
    • Page NavigationUse this area to navigate through different pages.
    • Edit BookmarkClick on an existing bookmark to modify its settings.
    • Add BookmarkClick here to create a new bookmark at your current location.
    • Bookmark LetterHere, you can view and modify the letter associated with the bookmark.
    • Bookmark NameHere, you can view and modify the name assigned to the bookmark.
    • Selected Bookmark IndicatorThe currently selected bookmark is highlighted with an orange rectangle.
    • Remove BookmarkTap here to delete the selected bookmark.
    • Increase Bookmark SizeTap to enlarge the display size of the bookmark.
    • Decrease Bookmark SizeTap to reduce the display size of the bookmark.
    • Back ButtonTap to exit this menu and return to the Bookmarks screen.

    Keyboard / MIDI Hotkeys

    There is a way to trigger actions using a keyboard key or a mouse event.
    So you can for example open the library or turn a page.
    For details on where to setup please check the App Settings .

    Playlist

    MusicReader has options to use playlists.
    With playlists you can put pieces in a specific order and use them in that order.
    When you turn the last page of one piece, then it will go to next in the playlist.

    Select & Use

    In the main playlist screen you can see the selected playlist with the pieces in the defined order.
    Also you can see where the current piece is inside the order.
    The screen also provides playlist select, editing and sharing options.
    Details are shown in the screenshot below.
    • Active PlaylistView the current folder and name of the active playlist.
    • Filter ListUse this field to search for a specific piece in a long playlist.
    • Playlist PiecesClick on a piece to play it immediately.
    • Edit PlaylistClick here to make changes to the pieces in the active playlist.
    • Reorder PlaylistClick here to change the order of the pieces in the playlist.
    • Current FolderView the current folder for your active playlist. Change it to open or create a playlist in a different folder.
    • Active Playlist NameView the name of the active playlist. Click here to switch to another playlist or create a new one.
    • Share PlaylistClick here to share the active playlist with others.

    Edit

    In the edit mode you can change the playlist.
    Pieces can be added, moved and removed.
    See the screenshot below on how this works.
    • Manage Playlist ItemsIn this area, you can rearrange the order of items or remove items from the active playlist.
    • Library PiecesSelect a piece from this area to add it to the active playlist.
    • Delete PlaylistClick this icon to permanently delete the current active playlist.
    • Duplicate PlaylistClick here to create a duplicate of the current active playlist, which will then be set as the new active playlist.
    • Rename PlaylistClick this icon to modify the name of the current playlist.
    • Set Page RangeDefine the start and end pages of the piece here, allowing you to include only a specific section of the piece in the playlist.
    • Remove Item from PlaylistUse this icon to remove an item from the playlist; the item will still be available in the library.
    • Move ItemThis icon allows you to drag and drop an item to a different position within the playlist.

    Reorder

    The reorder screen allows for an easy reordering of pieces inside the playlist.
    See screenshot below for ways the playlist can be reordered.
    • Sort Playlist AlphabeticallyClick on the column header to arrange the playlist items in alphabetical order according to that column.
    • Drag and Drop ItemUse this icon to click and hold an item, then drag it to a different position within the playlist.
    • Shift Item DownMove the selected item one position down in the playlist.
    • Shift Item UpMove the selected item one position up in the playlist.

    App & Account Setup

    There are several customizations and settings available in MusicReader.
    These will be described in the coming sections.

    Top Menu Customization

    The top menu in MusicReader can be customized, so it shows the features you use most.
    See the screenshots below for the steps to take to make these changes.
    1. Full MenuPress this icon to go to the full menu.
    2. Edit Top MenuPress here to start editing the top menu.
    • Manage Existing Menu ItemsSelect an existing menu item to remove it, or click and drag it to relocate it within the menu.
    • Add Item from Full MenuClick on an item in the full menu to add it to the top menu.
    • Confirm / Save ChangesClick this icon to save the modifications you have made to the menu.

    Settings & Hotkeys

    In MusicReader there are multiple settings to have it work the way you want.
    The screenshot below shows these settings with a description.
    • App Language SettingsModify the language in which the App displays content.
    • Save Last Active PlaylistThis option remembers your last opened playlist. When you restart the App, it will automatically load that playlist.
    • Save Last Active PieceThis option remembers your last opened piece of music. The next time you launch the App, it will reopen that piece for you.
    • Disable Zoom FunctionalityTurn off the zoom feature for touchscreens and mouse scroll, preventing zooming in or out.
    • Enable Direct Drawing with StylusAutomatically enter annotation mode when an active stylus pen is detected, allowing for immediate drawing or writing.
    • Toggle Fullscreen ModeSwitch to fullscreen view by hiding all system interface elements, providing a distraction-free experience.
    • Hide Menu on Opening PieceAutomatically hide the menu when you open a new piece for a streamlined view.
    • Invert Music Display ColorsChange the display to show a black background with white musical notes.
    • Activate Pressure Sensitive Line Width for StylusWhen enabled, the thickness of drawn lines will vary according to the pressure applied with the stylus pen.
    • MIDI ConfigurationConfigure MIDI input and output settings, which are used by the music player and for MIDI shortcuts.
    • Keyboard and MIDI ShortcutsEnable shortcuts for certain keyboard keys or MIDI events, allowing you to trigger actions using the keyboard.
    • Keyboard and MIDI Shortcuts ConfigurationThis area allows you to activate shortcuts for specific keyboard keys or MIDI events, enabling you to trigger actions using your keyboard.

    Foot Pedal

    In MusicReader you can use foot pedals, for page turning, but also to trigger other functions.
    The settings for foot pedals can be configured in the screen shown below.
    • Select Number of PedalsChoose how many pedals your foot pedal has.
    • Pedal Type ConfigurationSpecify the type of pedal you are using.
    • Normal (HID) Pedal ModeThis mode is for pedals that connect via Bluetooth or USB. Ensure your pedal is in the correct mode: - For iOS/iPadOS and Android, we recommend the mode that represents arrow keys (↑ ↓), which is often labeled as iOS/Android or Page Up/Down mode. Check your pedal's manual for specifics. Important: This is the only available mode for iOS/iPadOS. - For Windows and macOS, both arrow keys and Page Up/Down modes are supported. Refer to your pedal's manual to determine which mode transmits these keys.
    • App Direct (GATT) ModeThis mode is for AirTurn pedals. Connect using the Foot Pedal Settings in MusicReader if your pedal is set to App Direct (GATT). Important: App Direct is only available on iOS/iPadOS and Android. Use Normal Pedal (HID) mode for Windows/Mac.
    • USB Pedal ModeSelect this option for USB-connected pedals that send arrow keys (↑ ↓) or Page Up/Down commands.
    • Connect Pedal ButtonPress this button to initiate the connection with your pedal.
    • Pedal Action ConfigurationSet the specific actions assigned to each pedal here.
    • Page Time Block SettingThis option prevents accidental double triggers by temporarily disabling the pedal after each press. You can set the blocking time here; setting it to 0 will turn off the blocking feature.

    Account

    Your account contains your music (backup) and subscription.
    The settings of the account screen are explained in screenshot below.
    • Account Expiration DateThis indicates the date when your subscription will expire.
    • Order Extension OptionsThese are the available options for extending your account subscription. The options may vary based on your current expiration date.
    • Delete AccountClick here if you wish to discontinue using MusicReader and delete your account. Please note that this action is irreversible, so ensure you understand the consequences.
    • View OrdersClick here to view a list of your previous orders.
    • Edit Customer ProfileClick here to view or update your personal information.

    Annotations

    To annotate a piece press the annotation icon in the menu as shown below.
    1. Click Annotation ToolsClick here to access the annotation tools. This feature allows you to add comments, highlights, or other annotations to your document.

    Menu

    In the annotation mode you get the menu as shown below.
    • Add TextUse this tool to insert text into your music.
    • Add SymbolsUse this tool to insert musical symbols into your music.
    • Erase AnnotationsUse this tool to remove any annotations made in the music.
    • Turn PagesPress the arrows to navigate forward or backward through the pages.
    • Draw and WriteUse this tool to write or draw directly on the music.
    • Highlight AreasUse this tool to highlight specific sections of the music.
    • Select Using RectanglePress this option to select all annotations from the active tool by drawing a rectangle around them.
    • Adjust Color, Width, or SizeUse this option to modify the color and/or width/size of the currently selected tool.
    • Redo and Undo ChangesUse these buttons to redo or undo your recent changes.

    Pencil & Marker

    Below the functioning of the pencil and marker tools are shown and explained.
    • Interactive Drawing AreaThis area allows you to write or draw on the sheet music using a pen, stylus, mouse, trackpad, or your finger on a touchscreen.
    • Select Pencil ToolClick this icon to activate the pencil tool for drawing on the sheet music.
    • Adjust Line PropertiesThis section displays the current line width and color. Click here to modify these settings.
    • Using the Marker ToolClick and drag the cursor over the sheet music to highlight or annotate sections.
    • Activate MarkerClick this icon to enable the marker tool for making annotations.
    • Customize Marker SettingsClick here to adjust the width, color, or transparency of the marker.

    Eraser

    Erasing annotations can be done using erase tool as shown below.
    • Erase AnnotationsPress and drag over the annotated area to remove the annotations.
    • Activate EraserClick this icon to select the eraser tool.
    • Adjust Eraser SizeUse this option to change the size of the eraser tool.

    Symbols

    You can also add symbols into the sheet music.
    See the screenshots below on how this works.
    • Change SymbolPress this button again to modify the current symbol.
    • Adjust Color and SizeUse this option to change the color and size of a symbol.
    • Add New SymbolClick on the sheet music to insert a new symbol.
    • Select Symbol to ChangeChoose an existing symbol that you wish to modify.
    • Highlighted Selected SymbolThe red rectangle signifies that this symbol is currently selected.
    • Enlarge SymbolClick this button to increase the size of the highlighted symbol.
    • Delete SymbolClick this button to remove the currently selected symbol from the interface.
    • Modify Color or SizeClick here to change the color or size of the currently selected symbol.
    • Shrink SymbolClick this button to decrease the size of the highlighted symbol.

    Text

    You can also add text to the sheet music.
    See the screenshots below on how to do this.
    • Text ToolTap here to activate the text editing tool.
    • Size / Color IndicatorThis area displays the current text size and color. Tap to modify them.
    • Add New TextTap this icon to insert new text.
    • Edit Existing TextTap on the existing text to select it. After selection, you can also drag to reposition it.
    After adding of selecting a text, you get the edit bar shown below.
    • Edit TextClick here to modify the text content that you want to use.
    • Adjust Text Size/WidthSelect this option to change the size or width of the text.
    • Return to Annotations MenuClick here to go back to the annotations menu.
    • Reduce Text SizePress this button to decrease the size of the text.
    • Delete TextRemove the selected text from the music project.
    • Increase Text SizeUse this option to enlarge the text size.

    Devices

    MusicReader has multiple devices integrated.
    The following sections will describe them.

    Dictionary

    With this dictionary you can find the meaning of musical terms in your sheet music.
    • Search FunctionalityUse this feature to search for musical terms within the list.
    • List of Musical TermsSelect a musical term from this list to view its explanation.
    • Term ExplanationProvides a detailed explanation of the selected musical term.

    Metronome

    With metronome you can hear / see the tempo of a piece.
    See the screenshot below for the settings.
    • Start / Stop MetronomeUse this area to start or stop the metronome. Once activated, it will display the current beats.
    • Tempo SettingAdjust the metronome's tempo by specifying the beats per minute (BPM).
    • Beat Count SettingSelect the total number of beats for the metronome cycle.
    • Display in Sheet MusicEnable this option to visualize the beats of the metronome within your sheet music.
    • Toggle SoundActivate or deactivate the sound of the metronome with this button.
    The metronome can also be shown in the top menu, as shown below.
    • Metronome SettingsAccess the full metronome configuration screen by pressing this icon to adjust various metronome settings.
    • Collapse MenuPress this icon to minimize the metronome menu for a cleaner interface.
    • Toggle MetronomeUse this button to start or stop the metronome function.

    Music Player

    With the music player you can play recording to the speakers on your system.
    The options of the music player are shown below.
    • Playback ControlsThis area contains the Start/Stop buttons and the progress indicator for audio playback.
    • Attached Recordings ListThis area displays all recordings that are currently attached to this sheet music. Use the button in the last column to remove a recording from this list. If only one recording is attached, it will automatically load when you open the sheet music. If automatic play is enabled, the recording starts playing immediately; otherwise, you must start it manually.
    • Available Audio FilesThis area lists all audio files currently available in MusicReader. You can remove recordings from this list to attach them to the current sheet music using the buttons in the last columns.
    • Current Recording NameThis icon displays the name of the currently loaded audio recording.
    • Share RecordingThis icon allows you to share the currently loaded recording with others or save it to another location.
    • Attach/Detach RecordingThis button is used to attach or detach the currently loaded recording to or from the sheet music.
    • Access Sound RecorderPress this icon to open the sound recorder feature.
    • Enable Automatic PlaybackThis option automatically starts playback when a single recording is attached to the sheet music. If disabled, you will need to start playback manually.
    The music player can also be shown in the top menu, as shown below.
    • Open Full Music PlayerTap this icon to access the complete music player interface. From this screen, you can choose different recordings or modify the current selections associated with the sheet music.
    • Music Player Playback ControlsUse these controls to start or stop the playback of your music.

    Tuner

    • Toggle Tuner On/OffThis area allows you to activate or deactivate the tuner. When activated, it will display the tuning offset in cents.
    • Play Selected NotePress this icon to play the currently selected musical note through your device's speakers.
    • Set Tuner FrequencyUse this icon to adjust the tuning frequency for A4, which can be set between 410 Hz and 480 Hz.
    The instrument tuner can also be shown in the top menu, as shown below.
    • Disable TunerPress this button to turn off the tuner.
    • Adjust Tuner SettingsAccess this option to modify the frequency and other settings related to the tuner.
    With this instrument tuner you can tune your instrument.

    Sound Recorder

    With the sound recording you can record using the microphone of your device.
    The options are shown in screenshot below.
    • Playback/Recording ProgressDisplays the current position and total length of the recording.
    • Save RecordingStore the most recent music recording.
    • Stop Playback/RecordingCease current playback or recording activity.
    • Playback RecordingPlay back the recording that you have just created.
    • Start RecordingInitiate a new recording, which will overwrite the unsaved previous recording.
    • Music PlayerAccess your previously recorded music.
    The sound recorder can also be shown in the top menu, as shown below.
    • Sound Recorder ControlsButtons for recording audio, playing back recordings, and stopping the recording.
    • Open Full Sound RecorderClick this icon to expand and open the complete sound recorder window.
    • Close Sound Recorder MenuClick this icon to close the sound recorder's menu.

    Browser

    With integrated browser you can download files from website and add them to MusicReader.
    The browser is shown in the screenshot below.
    • Website URL EntryEnter the URL of the website you wish to visit in this field.
    • Recommended Sheet Music SourcesA list of sources for sheet music recommended by MusicReader.
    • Your Favorite Sheet Music WebsitesInput the websites where you often download sheet music here.
    • Go to Previous PageNavigate back to the previous page you visited.
    • Return to Home PageClick here to return to the start page of the browser.
    • Go to Next PageProceed to the next page you have visited.
    • Close BrowserClick here to close the browser.
    When you want to download a file you do the steps shown below.
    • Download File ButtonPress this button to initiate the download of the file. This button is only available for compatible file types.
    • Download LinkClick this link to download the file. Ensure that the file is a PDF or another compatible format.
    After the file is download you can add it to MusicReader as shown below.
    • Add File ButtonOnce the download is finished, press this button to open the File Adding Screen.

    Special Topics

    Files from MusicReader PDF 4

    In this section we will show you how to add files from your MR4 Library to the new MusicReader.

    To succesfully do this please make sure to fully transfer all PDF files, folders and playlists at once.

    Windows and Mac

    On Windows / Mac, you can transfer your library in the following way:

    1. Go to the system where MR4 is installed.
    2. Login to your account on www.mrsync.com.
    3. Go to Add Files in the left menu of the account.
    4. Then choose Local Files option.
    5. Select Folder under Choose Folder option.
    6. Now select the folder where MR PDF 4 library is stored.In most cases, that is "Sheet Music PDF" folder under "Documents".
    7. After confirming the selection, you should get a notice. Carefully read this notice.
    8. Then press Start MR4 Import and have it complete.
    9. Your files are now in the library on MRSync.com.
    10. Sync your new MusicReader App to transfer the files there.

    iPad

    Need to transfer files from iPad? Then please follow these steps:

    1. On your iPad start MusicReader PDF 4
    2. Go to MORE ->Settings.
    3. Select the tab Upgrades.
    4. Press Copy Library to new MusicReader* and confirm you want to do this.
    5. Please have the transfer fully finish, you get a notice when transfer is ready.
    6. After the transfer finished confirm you want to go to next step.
    7. MRSync.com website will open, please login with your account.
    8. After logging in it will start the file conversion. Please carefully read instructions the screen shows.
    9. Let the transfer completely finish.
    10. Your files are now in the library on MRSync.com.
    11. Sync your new MusicReader App to transfer the files there.


    If the steps above cause problems, then there is also an alternative way.

    For this method, you need a Cloud Dive like iCloud/Dropbox/Drive.

    This Cloud Dive needs to be installed both on your iPad and on a Mac / Windows machine.

    These are the steps you then take with that:

    1. First, make sure you have the Cloud Drive active on both your iPad and on a Mac / Windows machine. This to ensure you can follow steps below.
    2. Now go to the Files App on your iPad.
    3. There, choose On My iPad in the left menu.
    4. Choose MusicReader 4 folder
    5. There, press Select in the top menu.
    6. Then press Select All in top menu to select all files and folders.
    7. A menu appears at the bottom, here you choose Move. (It will copy instead - see step 9 - there it should say "Copy")
    8. Now select the Cloud Drive you want to use.
    9. There, you create a new folder using the icon in the top menu. After doing that, you should see a "Folder is Empty" message.
    10. Then press the Copy in the left top corner.
    11. Makes sure it fully finishes.
    12. After it finished, go to your Mac / Windows machine.
    13. On the Mac / Windows machine, login to your account on www.mrsync.com.
    14. Go to Add Files in the left menu of the account.
    15. Then choose Local Files option.
    16. Select Folder under Choose Folder option.
    17. Now select the folder where you have stored the files on cloud storage.
    18. After confirming the selection, you should get a notice. Carefully read this notice.
    19. Then press Start MR4 Import and have it complete.
    20. Your files are now in the library on MRSync.com.
    21. Sync your new MusicReader App to transfer the files there.

    Android - Installing APK File

    Some Android tablets do not have Google Play installed on this.

    For those tablets, you can also download APK-file of MusicReader.

    This file can then be directly installed on your tablet.

    MusicReader is currently only available for Windows 10 / 11.

    If you have an older version of Windows then there are still a few options.

    Install Windows 10

    Many systems can be upgraded to Windows 10.

    You don't have to pay for it, it's possible to do this for free.

    Run Android Release

    Run the Android App using Bluestack or LDPlayer.

    Those can run Android Apps on Windows machines.
